Mahashay Dharampal Gulati, the owner of masala brand MDH passed away on early Tuesday morning (December 3). He was 97 years old.

According to reports, Gulati was undergoing treatment at a hospital in New Delhi since the past three weeks. The cause of death is being attributed to a cardiac arrest which he suffered at around 5.30 am in the morning.

Gulati was born in Sialkot in Pakistan and later migrated to India after the partition. MDH (Mahashian Di Hatti) was founded by his father Mahashay Chunni Lal Gulati. Later on, Gulati joined the business.

The business flourished under his leadership and over the years, MDH has emerged as one of the oldest brands in India. Gulati was not only a distributor but also an exporter of famous masala brand. His company exported Indian spices to various parts of the world. According to the reports, Gulati donated nearly 70 per cent of his salary to charity.

Gulati was awarded the Padma Bhushan, for India’s third highest civilian award in the country, in 2019.

Several ministers took to Twitter to express his condolences. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also expressed their condolences.

"India's most inspiring entrepreneur, MDH owner Dharm Pal Mahashay passed away this morning. I have never met such an inspiring and lively soul. May his soul rest in peace." Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia 

"Dharm Pal ji was very inspiring personality. He dedicated his life for the society. God bless his soul." Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted.
