The Maharashtra government has decided to gradually convert diesel-powered boats operating in the Gateway of India area into electric boats in a phased manner to reduce pollution on Mumbai's coastline.

Nitesh Rane, while giving this information on Tuesday, May 19, said that this project will start with select beneficiaries. This will help in modernizing the boat fleet of the traditional Koli community in Mumbai.

Scheme of financial assistance to the Koli community

This initiative will be implemented in collaboration with Mumbai District Central Co-operative Bank and there is a plan to provide financial assistance and easy loans to the boat owners.

According to the information given by the officials, 97 licensed wooden boats are currently operating in the Gateway of India area. These boats are used for tourism services as well as fishing related activities.

As the boat owners have to spend up to Rs 1 lakh on diesel every month, this business is becoming more expensive.

Promoting eco-friendly tourism

During a meeting with Pravin Darekar, Rane said that electric boats will save a lot in fuel costs and will boost eco-friendly tourism in Mumbai.

He also mentioned that this decision is in line with Narendra Modi's appeal for fuel conservation and sustainable development.

Electric boats are expensive; loan ready at low interest rates

According to information, the cost of an electric boat can be between Rs 2.5 crore and Rs 6 crore. Therefore, financial assistance will be essential for small boat owners.

The state government has directed the bank to prepare a low-interest loan scheme for fisheries cooperatives, associations and individual boat owners.

Rane also said that if individuals are allowed to establish cooperatives independently, it will be easier for them to avail government subsidies and various welfare schemes.

Priority given to 25 beneficiaries in the first phase

Priority will be given to 25 beneficiaries in the first phase of this project.

Meanwhile, Pravin Darekar said that this initiative will help preserve Mumbai's traditional maritime culture. It will also promote clean tourism and modern water transport system.
