A large quantity of expired and contaminated food products was found dumped along Agashi Road in Virar West, triggering concerns over public health and food safety. The incident comes amid an ongoing crackdown by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on hotels, grocery stores and food vendors across the Vasai-Virar region.
According to local residents, hundreds of packets of butter, expired food items, mould-infested noodles and other potentially unsafe products were discovered discarded in the open alongside regular garbage. Some of the products reportedly had expiry dates extending to December 2025, while others showed visible signs of fungal contamination.
Residents suspect that traders and food business operators may have disposed of the stock overnight in an attempt to evade regulatory action following recent FDA inspections and enforcement drives in the area.
The FDA has recently conducted raids and initiated punitive action against several hotels, warehouses and retail establishments in the Vasai-Virar region for alleged violations of food safety regulations. The intensified enforcement campaign has reportedly created anxiety among local business owners.
Citizens expressed serious concern that the discarded food products pose a significant threat to public health. They also alleged that some of the products may have been kept on sale despite being unfit for human consumption, raising questions about compliance with food safety standards.
Environmental concerns have also been raised, with residents warning that stray animals such as cows, buffaloes, dogs and birds could consume the contaminated food, potentially leading to severe illness or even death.
Locals have urged the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC), the Food and Drug Administration and other concerned authorities to immediately inspect the site, safely dispose of the dumped products and collect samples for laboratory testing.
They have also demanded a thorough investigation to identify those responsible and register criminal cases against individuals or businesses found guilty of violating food safety norms.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over food quality monitoring and the need for stricter enforcement to prevent expired or contaminated products from reaching consumers.
