In the last three to four days, a video is going viral where it is shown that mangoes are ripened with the use of calcium carbide chemical and is being done in Vashi’s Agricultural Produce Market Committee. When Mumbai Live contacted Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) commissioner (Thane department) Pallavi Darade, she said that she had asked FDA officials to carry out an inspection in Vashi’s APMC.

How many mangoes were seized?

As per the commissioner’s order, in the last three days, FDA officials checked in total 29 places where mangoes are being produced. Of 29 places, 109 mangoes worth ₹30,000 were seized from three places for inspection, said Suresh Deshmukh, assistant commissioner, FDA (Thane).

Deskhmukh cleared that sellers do not use calcium carbide powder or spray but use ethylene to ripen mangoes in Vashi’s APMC market. He said if ethylene is used more than needed, then it causes vomiting, dysentery and other health disorders.

Calcium Carbide is dangerous

Usually, mangoes take a lot of time to ripen and considering the demand, sellers pluck raw mangoes and with the help of calcium carbide, these mangoes are then ripened and are sold. These mangoes are not good for health, hence, FDA officials carry out a raid in the month of April-May. The same is being done this year as well.

During this year’s investigation, FDA officials found out that instead of calcium carbide, ethylene is being used more than its approved quantity i.e. 2 ppm. The collected samples have been sent to the laboratory and will be waiting for the report.
