The maintenance and repair works of six sensors which give early warning to the Disaster Management Room and related systems of possible floods and water logging incidents in the Thane Municipal area have been completed. Thus, it will be possible to manage potential disasters effectively.
These automatic censors have been operating for a few years at six locations - Thana College, Vrindavan Pumping Station, Saket Pipeline, Mumbra Crematorium, Hiranandani Estate and Gaimukh Waterfront. Their effective use has been suggested in the Thane Flood Hazard Control Action Plan. Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), an organisation working in the field of climate change, has prepared this action plan for Thane Municipal Corporation. The status of these sensors was discussed in the pre-monsoon review meeting.
If the amount of rainfall is high, the notification is sent to the integrated command and control centre of the smart city through these sensors. Accordingly, immediate messages are sent to concerned departments, ward committees, and disaster management departments. Hence, the system is able to cope with flood conditions, water logging etc.
Water accumulating in low-lying areas during heavy rains, obstruction of rain water from entering the creek during high tides, network of rainwater channels in municipal areas, pollution of waste in drains etc. cause extensive damage in different areas. In some cases, there is fear of loss of life. After studying all these conditions, an action plan is being prepared on how to handle this flood-like situation and how to control it.
