Despite a drop in coronavirus cases for four consecutive days and decline in the death rate, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) expects an increase in the number of hospitalisations in coming days.
This comes at a time when Mumbai recorded nearly 11,000 new cases on Tuesday, January 11. Last week, the city’s daily COVID-19 count tally had breached 20,000 cases. However, the hospitalisation of patients remained low at that period and more than 85% of them were asymptomatic.
Around six lakh patients are in home quarantine and there are chances that some of them may get admitted in the coming days. Therefore, the hospitalisations may see an increase this week and next week, said a BMC official.

While speaking on the third wave, official stated that it was expected to see a decline in the number of positive cases in the third week of January. But the cases have already decreased in the last few days in the city. If this downfall remains till the end of the week, it can be said that the third wave has subsided. “So, after a few days, we can say we are going from 'Pandemic' to 'Endemic',” civic body official added.
Maharashtra COVID-19 task force member Dr Shashank Joshi on Tuesday, January 11, said that city's COVID-19 wave is flattening.
