BMC Chief Ajoy Mehta submitted an investigation report of the Kamala Mills Fire case on Thursday and the report based on the fire audit report confirmed the cause of the fire being a hookah at Mojo’s bistro and then spreading to 1Above.

In the official report, Mehta has also ordered a departmental inquiry of 10 BMC officials from the Building Proposal Department, G/South ward and Fire Brigade, including two Assistant Commissioners and Deputy Executive Health Officer.

The report also mentions how the regulatory agencies need to strengthen their compliance machinery as there is also need to put in place legally mandated formats wherein business premises need to put out information related to safety measures in the public domain.

There have been multiple violations of the stipulations in DCR and IT policy and the BMC is going to investigate the matter further ahead.

Ajoy Mehta believes there’s a need to strengthen the implementing machinery without compromising on the speed of delivery as expected under ease of doing business. He recommends changes in MMC Act. for eating houses/ restaurant with a stringent provision of punishment.

They also want to change existing eating house licensing procedure and monsoon she permission procedure.
