The Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation on Saturday, August 1, became the civic body in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to cross 20,000 cases of the coronavirus. With 303 fresh cases reported in the area, the caseload is 20,270.

Moreover, eleven people succumbed to the disease, taking the toll to 368. However, even though cases have witnessed a surge in the area, experts have opined that the civic body is now better equipped to deal with the surge in COVID-19 cases.

On Friday, as KDMC inched closer to the grim milestone of 20,000 cases, it reported 329 fresh cases. KDMC, which had crossed the 15,000-mark along with the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on July 17, now has more active cases than Thane.

Meanwhile, in Thane, hotspots shot up from 27 to 40 in two weeks. Malls and shopping complexes had begun sanitization and were readying their Standard Operating Procedure for both staffers and customers. Deputy municipal commissioner Sandip Malvi said that restrictions on crowded places will have to continue. On Thursday alone, 3,511 tests were done in Thane, and 3,565 swab reports had arrived. On Friday, TMC reported 313 fresh cases, taking the total to 19,027. With 10 deaths on Friday, the toll has reached 618.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra has reported 9,601 fresh cases of the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, taking the tally of confirmed cases to 4,31,719, as per the state health department.
