The Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) is all geared up to finally acquiring its own testing laboratory.

CM Uddhav Thackeray is touted to inaugurate the laboratory and the two COVID-19 care facilities in Patidar hall in Shahad and Asra school in Kalyan via videoconferencing. Vijay Suryawanshi, KDMC Chief, further speaking to the media stated that the two facilities will have 400 beds each including 300 oxygenated beds and 20 ICU ones. Furthermore, these labs are said to conduct 3,000 tests every day.

The KDMC area in recent times has emerged as a new hotspot for COVID-19 as the number of cases of coronavirus witness a spike. As of July 21, approximately 450 to 550 people from this area are being diagnosed with the coronavirus daily. In order to contain the spread of the contagious disease, any AMC patients or high-risk patients that are found with symptoms, a swab test is done for them immediately and in case the test results come positive for the coronavirus, the person is sent to a COVID-19 facility.

Meanwhile, last week, the KDMC had acquired 80 per cent beds in private hospitals for treatment for the COVID-19 patients. In an order issued regarding the same, Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryavanshi stated that beds in pediatric intensive care units, NICUs and dialysis wards will be exempted from this.

On the other hand, the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation has roped in local corporators to help screen cases of coronavirus and conduct a contact tracing drive. In a letter, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (medical) Sambaji Waghmare has appealed to the corporators to convince locals to cooperate with civic staff during the drive.

Corporators can assist in the admission of the patients suffering from the coronavirus, provide manpower and help set up mohalla clinics in the wards. Moreover, a special survey of suspected patients will be carried out with the help of the health department employees, civic staff, teachers and Anganwadi workers.
