Lockdown extended till August 31 in Thane across containment zones

TMC Commissioner Vipin Sharma informed that the civic body in Thane city has extended the lockdown till August 31 midnight in view of the increasing number of coronavirus cases.

Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Friday extended the lockdown in Thane city till August 31. However, the restriction will be applicable in areas marked as hotspots and containment zones while the rest of the city will operate as per the guidelines issued by the Maharashtra government under ‘Mission Begin Again’. 

Recently, the Maharashtra government allowed shopping malls and market complexes to function from August 5 under ‘Mission Begin India’ which is aimed at unlocking the economic activities in the state. 

In Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and rest of the state, the malls and market complexes will be operational without theatres, food courts and restaurants from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The kitchens of restaurants and food courts have been allowed to function with restrictions and they have to follow the standard operation procedure (SOP) issued by concerned authorities.

However, TMC Commissioner Vipin Sharma informed that the civic body in Thane city has extended the lockdown till August 31 midnight in view of the increasing number of coronavirus cases. 

The complete shutdown in Thane was lifted on July 19 as the restrictions remain limited to the containment zones. Now, the lockdown restrictions in containment zones and hotspot areas of Thane city have been extended for another month. 

However, the shops selling essential items will be allowed to remain open from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM along with vegetable markets.

Maharashtra remains one of the worst-hit states due to the coronavirus pandemic with 4,22,118 cases while the death toll is the state has touched 14,994. In Mumbai alone, the number of coronavirus cases have reached 1,14,284 and nearly 6,353 fatalities have been reported, as of July 31. 

In Thane district, the number of cases has reached 93,342 while Thane city has reported 20,500 COVID-19 cases and 713 deaths till now.
