As the coronavirus cases continue to increase in the city, Mumbai Live correspondent spoke to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) additional commissioner Suresh Kakani to know the plans that the civic body is chalking to keep the spread in control. Talking to us he mentioned that the lockdown is a not a solution to curb the spread of infection.

“Currently, 90 per cent of cases have been detected from high-rise buildings or housing societies and not from the slums, which are densely populated area. Even the sanctity of Dharavi has dropped very few cases to two or three. Moreover, it is observed that the cases are not coming in a concentrated manner from a particular locality. Hence, in my opinion, lockdown would not be a solution, people should follow COVID-appropriate behaviour,” said Kakani.

Moreover, he also stated that if everyone follows the norms right now, in any particular area or containment zone that have witnessed many more cases there are chances to curb the COVID-19 cases. However, if the situation doesn’t change soon, the civic body and the government will take some decision.

BMC additional commissioner added, “Though the origin of the sudden spike has not been identified, there are restrictions imposed in the city. It is said that the cases have seen a hike due to resumption in train services. We will take a review soon and take a decision on whether there is a need for lockdown or not. We are not saying that in future it won't be there. But if we get the appropriate or enough support from the citizens, definitely there won't be any need to put a city under lockdown.”

Meanwhile, BMC has appealed to housing complexes to inform the administration about the violators of COVID-19 rules. The civic body has also intensified the crackdown on restricted residential buildings.
