On Sunday, February 27, a power outage hit many parts of Mumbai following the tripping of the Mulund-Trombay. Train services were also affected owing to the power failure. While the supply was restored by 10.45 am, the Minister of Power, Nitin Raut announced a high-level probe into the same.

On the other hand, Dinesh Waghmare, the state energy department head attributed the power cut to a fire in the BARC mountains in Trombay. Many parts of the city were affected owing to the power failure that entailed Sion, Matunga, Parel, Dadar, CSMT, Byculla, Churchgate, parts of Chembur, Bandra and Kurla.

Tata Power took to Twitter elaborating on how parts of south Mumbai faced electricity failure because of considerable voltage fluctuations in the grid supplying power. However, Tata Power’s hydros plants were operational.

It added that the MSETCL transmission line from Kalwa to Trombay had voltage functions which resulted in the tripping of the Trombay Salsette-1 on overload. The Bhira Hydro Plant got islanded and synchronized. The electricity was eventually restored in nearly an hour.

Likewise, Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd added that the power outage was caused by tripping of 220 kV transmission line and subsequent outage of Tata's Trombay power plant.

Further, the body remarked that while its consumers were largely unaffected since they were able to ramp up generation at Dahanu, it helped in the restoration of consumers in south Mumbai as well.

The last time Mumbai suffered a major power outage was back on October 12, 2020, which affected homes and businesses.
