Maharashtra Announces 1% Reservation for Orphans in Govt Jobs and Education

The Maharashtra Government has announced a 1 per cent reservation for orphans in government jobs and education. Although the decision was cleared in the State Cabinet back in 2018, it couldn’t go through due to technical issues that have since been sorted.

State Women & Child Development Minister, Yashomati Thakur said that the state will also offer jobs to candidates who have participated in exams for government jobs but couldn’t get the jobs due to a delay in the results.

“All those, who have appeared for exams but could get it because of delay in declaring results, will now be accommodated in the government jobs,” Thakur said after the cabinet meeting.

The revised policy categorizes orphans into three categories - A, B, and C. While orphans under the A and B categories are eligible for reservation in government jobs and educational schemes, those under the C category will only benefit from educational schemes.

The reservation will be provided on the basis of the number of job vacancies and seats available for admissions. A senior official from the Women and Child Development Department said that other criteria including age, educational qualifications and so on are the same as the current norms for the Scheduled Caste category.

“The state was facing difficulties in providing the same benefits to all kinds of orphans, and thus made the desired changes, making it feasible,” an official said under anonymity.

Orphans without parents, siblings, relatives, or villages will come under the ‘A’ category. Meanwhile, orphans who have lost their parents and those who have grown up at an orphanage will come under the ‘B’ category. The ‘C’ category will include people who lost their parents before adulthood, were brought up by their relatives, and have caste-related documentation.
