Maharashtra Government forms Committee to assist police stations in Mumbai with additional workforce

The committee, headed by IPS officer Amitabh Gupta, will provide additional manpower to police stations in Mumbai city to compile the list of migrants who want to travel to their respective states.

The Maharashtra government on Sunday constituted a committee to provide additional human resource to assist the police station staff in compiling the list of migrants who wish to undertake travel to their respective states. 

The committee is being headed by IPS officer Amitabh Gupta who is the Principal Secretary (Special) in the Home Department. The committee includes Mumbai city Joint Commissioner Vinay Chaube and Deputy Secretary of General Administration Department Rahul Kulkarni. 

The committee constituted by the Maharashtra government will provide manpower to the local police stations in Mumbai city for compiling, updating and processing the data on the National Migrant Information System (NMIS). Moreover, the committee will deploy those who age less than 40 years 

“As per the requirement, the committee will requisite and deploy manpower having age less than 40 years from Mantralaya and other field officials of various government department,” the order signed by Chief Secretary Ajoy Mehta read. 

The order further stated that all the heads of the department should assist in providing workforce as requisitioned by the committee as emergency essential services till May 31. 

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government earlier asked police personnel above the age of 55 to stay home amid the coronavirus outbreak. State Home Minister Anil Deshmukh informed that nearly 23,000 police personnel, aged between 50 to 55, have been given low-risk police station tasks while 12,000 personnel aged above 55 have been asked to stay home. 

The Maharashtra government on Sunday announced the extension of lockdown orders till May 31. to contain the spread of the coronavirus or COVID-19 in the state. As per the order dated May 17 signed by Chief Secretary Ajoy Mehta, the state executive committee issued directions to extend the lockdown till May 31.
