After being exonerated, IPS officer Amitabh Gupta has resumed work. Gupta, Principal Secretary (Special) in the Home Department, was sent on compulsory leave by the Maharashtra government for issuing permission letter to Wadhawan brothers - Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan - to travel during the lockdown period.

The letter signed by Gupta allowed the Wadhawan family and their friends consisting of 23 members to travel during lockdown from Khandala to their guest house in Mahabaleshwar in Satara district for “family emergency”.

As this happened, the Maharashtra government sent him on compulsory leave and state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh ordered a high-level probe into the matter.

The probe was carried out by Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) Manoj Saunik and the report was submitted to Home Ministry. The enquiry report into the allegations against Gupta concluded that he exceeded his jurisdiction.

The three-page report submitted by Saunik to the additional chief secretary (home) Sanjay Kumar and chief secretary Ajoy Mehta stated that Gupta had no authority to issue the letter and that he had exceeded his authority.

Anil Deshmukh earlier informed that the letter written by IPS officer Gupta was in violation of the lockdown guidelines and nobody had asked him to do so. Gupta admitted that he did not write the letter allowing Wadhawan family and their friends to travel to Mahabaleshwar under any pressure, he added.

Mahabaleshwar Police had found 23 people at a farmhouse including the members of Wadhawan family. Kapil Wadhawan and Dheeraj Wadhawan - the accused in Yes Bank and DHFL fraud cases - were detained by the police.

Later, the Wadhawan brothers were arrested by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team from Mahabaleshwar in connection with the Yes bank fraud case. The move came after the special CBI court vacated the stay on their arrest.
