In recent developments, the Maharashtra government has approved the payment of ₹50,000 annually to every judge of the Bombay High Court for buying spectacles.

According to the government resolution of the state, law and judiciary department, the decision covers judges, their spouses and the family members that are dependent on them. Elucidating on the high amount allotted for just mere glasses, legal advisor and joint secretary Yogesh Ameta stated that the amount of ₹50,000 is said to include the recurring expenses as well.

In a decision that is set to raise quite a few eyebrows, this resolution is speculated to diminish the range of vision of the Justice in the High Court in the upcoming days for sure, especially now that this new 'vision' has been bestowed upon them. Moreover, if the strain on the eyes concerns the government, the benefits of this new resolution could have been extended to other servicemen in the government as well who deal with a lot of paperwork in their daily lives.

At a time when the city of Mumbai is plagued by the coronavirus, the question that comes immediately to the mind is if this additional funding happens to be the most rational decision that the government could make given that the judges of the HC anyway are salaried employees capable of funding their own spectacles just like the rest of us. However, one thing that remains to be seen is the effect this new move will have on the state of justice served at the HC since accusations of the justice system being myopic now have to be shouldered by the government as well.
