The Maharashtra government on Saturday asked the district collectors or the administrators to demarcate containment areas which fall under red and orange zones in the state.

The Union Health Ministry has identified 14 districts as red zones, 16 as orange zones and six as green zones in Maharashtra. Moreover, the Union Home Ministry has extended the lockdown for two more weeks from May 4.

The fresh guidelines issued by the centre state that the boundary of a containment zone will be a residential colony, mohalla, municipal ward, municipal zone, police station area or town in case of urban areas. In the case of rural areas, the containment zone’s boundary should be a village, a cluster of villages, gram panchayat, a group of police stations and blocks.

The order specifies that the containment zones should be defined judiciously in cities like Mumbai and Pune while keeping in mind the administrative reach and control over the same.

The medical officers will carry out a risk assessment to decide on the contact tracing, home or institutional quarantining within the containment zones, the order read with details of the protocols to be followed in the containment zones.

Movement of individuals will remain strictly prohibited between 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM in containment zones while maximum precautions are needed to ensure that there no movement of the population in and out of these zones except for a medical emergency and for maintaining the supply of essentials, the order stated.

The OPDs and clinics are allowed to operate in red, orange and green zones with precautions like social distancing but not in the containment zones. Moreover, the manufacturing of essential goods, medicines, IT hardware among other things will be permitted except in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and Malegaon.

As of May 3, Maharashtra has reported nearly 12,974 COVID-19 cases while the death toll of the state has risen to 548. Of these cases, almost 8800 cases have been reported from Mumbai alone.
