According to latest reports, the Maharashtra government has given a deadline of April 30, 2023, to all the education departments to take action against illegal education institutions. These also include non-state board schools that do not have the mandatory affiliation certificates.

With the academic year ending on May 1, the education commissioner has warned the various divisional officers of stern action.

A total of 674 schools, including 239 in Mumbai were found to be illegal and the state had directed education officers to take action against them before the start of the academic year 2022-23.

Another 218 private unaided schools in the city have not renewed their recognition certificate, which is valid for three years for class 1 to 8. Of these, there are many renowned schools involved in this matter. Most of these schools have been making it to the list since the past few years.

For those unversed, according to the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, schools are required to renew their RTE approval every three years.

Failure to obtain the renewal means that schools may be fined INR 10,000 per day until they meet the standards, as well as for operating the school without recognition. In addition, the management of these schools will also face a INR 1 lakh fine.
