On Friday, April 8, Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut remarked that the state government has undertaken the decision to purchase additional power from Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL) to avert load shedding as well as ensure the smooth supply of electricity, reports stated.
According to accounts, the power demand is anticipated to reach 30,000 MW soon. Presently, the power exchange rate is INR 12 per unit. Taking into consideration the higher rate, CGPL will offer electricity at INR 5.50 and INR 5.7 per unit which will mitigate the financial burden on the state-operated Mahavitaran.
Based on narratives, the Maharashtra cabinet approved to explore many options of power purchase by Mahavitaran to meet the rising power demand which will in turn avoid load shedding.
The decision was reportedly taken at a special council of Ministers meeting conducted on Friday by the state Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The cabinet has decided that the Board of Directors of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) could take the requisite decisions in regard to the power purchase agreement as decided by the Central Ministry of Power.
It has also been reported that the MSEDCL was permitted to purchase electricity for a short span till June 15, 2022, until the power generation and availability condition in Maharashtra was restored.
