The Maharashtra Police Department has reportedly appointed a private contractor to utilize the brass bullet cartridges and turn them into nameplates, trophies, and medals. Haryana’s Parik Sales Corporation has been awarded the tender to repurpose scrap brass from the police department into other items.

S Jagannathan, Additional Director General of Police (Planning and Coordination) elaborated on the process. “Once you fire a bullet, its cartridge is useless. A large number of cartridges pile up at our firing ranges after practice sessions. Since they cannot be used again, we are getting them recycled,” he said.

Parik Sales Corporation is a business out of Haryana’s Yamuna Nagar district. The company has reportedly offered to deliver 1 Kg of finished goods per 2.3 Kg of scrap received from the police department.

“Brass is a precious commodity and traditionally used a lot in the police force. We are just exchanging scrap metal for the finished product,” Jagannathan added.

The process of converting brass cartridges into medals or trophies is a long process that involves melting the scrap brass while removing residue like gunpowder. This, in turn, reduces the overall weight of the scrap.

Following a cooling process, the brass is shaped into bricks and ingots before being rolled into sheets of multiple shapes and sizes. It is only after this that the material is ready to be moulded into a custom product like trophies or nameplates.

As per the terms of the contract, Parik Sales will handle the cost of transporting the cartridges to its workshop where the necessary measurements are taken. The company will then have to handle the process of workmanship as well as returning the finished product.
