Despite environmentalists and other organisations opposing the construction of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial in Mumbai’s Arabian sea, Maharashtra government went ahead with the construction of the memorial whose reclamation work started on October 24.

After the Mumbai Boat Accident, the objection against the construction of the memorial has intensified. Maratha Seva Sangh on Friday protested against the state government saying that the construction of Shivaji Memorial in the sea is not safe.

Maratha Seva Sangh’s founder, Purushottam Khedekar, has written a letter to the state government demanding to construct the memorial on land instead of sea.

While opposing the decision, Khedekar said that crores of rupees will be spent in building the memorial which would not be accessible for six months.

Since its inception, we have been demanding the construction of Shivaji Memorial on a safe place, that is land. With the boat accident, our speculation has been proved. In the letter, I have written that the memorial should be built on land,” Maratha Seva Sangh Purushottam Khedekar said.
