Amid emerging concerns of Omicron cases and rising daily COVID-19 cases, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data has revealed that most of them are from high-rises.

It is pertinent to note that a similar situation was observed during the initial days of the first wave. Meanwhile, the latter part of the first wave saw more cases in the slums. Whereas the second wave affected mainly the non-slum areas.

Moreover, on Wednesday, December 22, Maharashtra reported more than 1,000 cases, which is highest so far since the beginning of the pandemic. Of which, mumbai reported nearly half of the tally in the state with 490 daily coronavirus cases.

Besides, the state has 65 Omicron cases, out of which 21 are from Mumbai.

According to the data revealed by the BMC, the top five wards that have registered a higher growth rate between December 14 and 19 are A ward (Fort, Nariman Point, Colaba), D ward (Malabar Hill, Kemps Corner), G South ward (Parel, Worli), H West ward (Bandra West, Khar West), K West ward (Andheri West).

These wards have a higher number of high-rises and are showing a rise in cases.

On the other hand, in wards like P North (Malad) and L (Kurla-Chembur), where 80 per cent of the population stays in slums, cases have not been increasing.

Civic health officials stated that more than 90 per cent of the fresh cases recorded are from high-rises, most of the cases were from the luxury apartments and hardly 5 per cent was from slums.

Earlier, BMC had stated that a serosurvey was likely to be conducted post-Diwali. However, now it has come to light that the civic body will conduct its sixth serosurvey in February 2022.

Previously, five serosurveys were conducted since last year. The BMC had conducted the first and second serosurveys in July and August 2020, respectively, in three civic wards. While the third survey was conducted in March this year in 24 wards. The fourth serosurvey from May to June, in the pediatric age group, had shown about 50 per cent with antibodies against COVID-19.

Mumbai’s fifth serosurvey, depicted a prominent prevalence of antibodies, with 86.64% of the 8,000-plus citizens examined depicting disclosure to coronavirus, highlighted reports.
