Mumbai Traffic Updates: Police Fines 23,547 auto rickshaws, taxis in October

On October 17, the Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) had issued a statement that said they will now take action against those autorickshaw and taxi drivers who refuses fares, under Motor Vehicles Act (MVA) section 178 (3), 1998.

According to a data released by the Mumbai Traffic Police, a total of 23,547 auto rickshaws and taxis have been fined in October for refusing to transport passengers for short-haul travel.

Of the total, 15,395 autorickshaws were fines INR 50 each and 8,152 taxis were fines INR 200 each.

While, this year from January to June, 13,340 auto-rickshaws and taxis were fined, in September itself, 12,432 auto-rickshaws and taxis were fined.

On October 17, the Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) had issued a statement that said they will now take action against those autorickshaw and taxi drivers who refuses fares, under Motor Vehicles Act (MVA) section 178 (3), 1998.

This development came after the city cops received several complaints that the nearest rent is being refused many times.

Hoardings and boards regarding the notification were also put outside railway stations and bus stops to spread awareness. The MTP got in touch with taxi and rickshaw unions to inform them about the order, as well.

Besides, all in-charge police inspectors have been directed to contact the associations of rickshaw and taxi drivers in their transport department and organise a meeting, so that rickshaw and taxi drivers should be enlightened about treating passengers with courtesy and not refusing fares.
