The fire at Mumbai’s ESIC Kamgar Hospital cost nine people their lives and injured 177 people on December 17, Monday. The fire caused the release of an immense amount of smoke on the hospital’s fourth floor where there were several newborn babies.
However, three staff's presence of mind saved the lives of seven newborn babies after they rescued them safely out of the hospital.
When Kamgar Hospital was blazing with fire at around 4:00 pm, nurses Jyoti Kamble, Seema and Prachi, were having lunch on the third floor near the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Suddenly, Dr. Ajit rushed towards them and told them to get out of the hospital. However, since there were seven infants in the ward, the nurses decided to carry them to safety.
However, by now, the hospital’s floor was gradually being filled with smoke and therefore, the nurses had to make a decision quickly. More importantly, two newborn babies were on a ventilator and therefore, the nurses decided to put masks on the babies and rescued them through the other side of the hospital.
After which, with the help of the Fire brigade department, the infants were admitted to Cooper Hospital. Currently, the children are said to be safe and stable and the authorities have contacted their parents who have received their children.
