Food delivery boy rescues 10 people during the ESIC Kamgar Hospital fire in Andheri

On Monday evening, a massive fire broke out at ESIC Kamgar Hospital in Marol, Andheri, where eight people lost their lives while 142 were injured. Amongst many who came forward to help the survivors, there was one person who did not think twice and joined rescue operation immediately.  

Sidhu Humanabade (20) was out delivering food for Swiggy on Monday evening when he saw smoke coming out of the ESIC Kamgar Hospital. He joined the rescue operation and managed to save 10 patients. As per a report in Times of India, Humanabade kept a ladder on the third-floor window ledge for an elderly woman to climb down but the ledge collapsed as soon as she got on to the ladder. He said he could do nothing as she plunged down but he scaled five storeys along with firemen to rescue people from the ESIC hospital.

Sidhu recalled how he heard screams of people seeking help. He climbed using the fire brigade’s ladder and used stones to break the glass facade in order to reach people. He stood on window ledges and got on to the floors to help people. He felt bad for two patients who unfortunately fell down even as he helped them on to the ladder.

After three hours into the rescue operation, he informed fireman that he was feeling pain in his chest. He was later admitted to Seven Hills Hospital Andheri for inhaling soot.

Sidhu is a Class X pass-out, who was raised in Airoli and had just moved in with his uncle in Andheri for the Swiggy job. His brother Chandrakant said that when they reached the hospital, they found him on oxygen support. Meanwhile, the food in Sidhu’s bike was intact, his chappals were there too, but someone took away his helmet, added Chandrakant.
