Trade Union leader Purshotam Samant aka Dada Samant commits suicide

Reports state that he hanged himself and left a suicide note which mentioned that he ended his life due to illness. Dahisar Police have filed a case of accidental death and are now investigating the matter.

Trade union leader, Purshotam Samant, known fondly as Dada Samant committed suicide on Friday, May 22, at his residence in Borivali. Reports state that he hanged himself and left a suicide note which mentioned that he ended his life due to illness. His wife was present at the house and the domestic help found the body hanging early in the morning. 

Dahisar Police have filed a case of accidental death and are now investigating the matter. 

Dada Samant was the father-in-law of Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Jitendra Awhad and Datta Samant's elder brother, who was also a legendary trade union leader back in time. His work was of utmost significance during the first railway strike in Bombay in 1960.

He worked as a technical officer at Jiyajee Rao Cotton Mills in Gwalior and returned to Bombay in 1981, a year before the strike in 1982, which was held by the mill workers. Known for his work related to labour laws, Dada headed the Kamgar Aghadi until 2011 after his brother Datta was killed in 1997.

Dada is survived by his wife and three daughters.
