Maharashtra Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad on Monday informed that the reason for him to contract coronavirus or COVID-19 was his overconfidence. The doctor informed that there was only 30 per cent chance of survival, Awhad said.

On April 19, Jitendra Awhad has been tested positive for the coronavirus or COVID-19 and was admitted to the Fortis hospital in Mulund after he complained of fever and uneasiness. However, Awhad was discharged after making full recovery on May 10.

Awhad, who has pre-existing ailments including hypertension and diabetes, said that the period between April 23 and 26 was the most crucial in his life as his family was told that there was a little chance of survival.

“The doctors told that my case was 70 per cent out of reach and only 30 per cent was left to human efforts. I should have visited doctors much in advance but I was overconfident and kept working which got me infected,” Jitendra Awhad said.

On April 13, Awhad went under precautionary self-quarantine at his home after he came in contact with at least one infected person. Nearly 16 staff members working for Awhad had tested positive for the coronavirus. These people include kitchen staff, cleaning staff along with other members working at his residence including five policemen deployed there.

It is suspected that Jitendra Awhad, who represents the Mumba-Kalwa constituency, contracted the infection after he met a senior police inspector of the Mumbra police station earlier in April to discuss the rules and implementation of the lockdown. The police officer was also tested positive last week when he was on leave at his native town in Nashik.
