The state government has sent a proposal to the central government to set up a fare fixing committee for the metro. Due to this, the metro fare is likely to increase in the coming months.
This fare hike can be applied to the Andheri (West)-Dahisar Metro 2A and Gundavali-Dahisar Metro 7 lines. The MMRDA had sent a proposal to set up a fare fixing committee to the state government in August.
The state government approved this proposal last month and sent it to the central government's Salt Pan Department. After the approval of the center, this committee will be set up under the chairmanship of a High Court judge.
Currently, the fare on MMRDA's Metro 2A and 7 lines is Rs 20 for distances of 3 to 12 km.
The underground metro fare is the highest among all these lines and is charged at Rs 40 for distances of 8 to 12 km. Even on Metro 1, the fare is only Rs 40 for a distance of 8 to 11.4 km.
Currently, more than 3 lakh passengers travel on MMRDA's metro lines every day. However, according to the project report, the number of passengers was expected to go up to 9 lakh in the first year.
Due to the large gap in the actual number, the income of the metro lines is lower than expected, while the expenses are constantly increasing. As a result, a huge financial loss is being suffered.
In addition, the fares of other metro lines in Mumbai are higher than those of MMRDA lines. Due to this discrepancy and the growing deficit, it is coming out that the administration is seriously considering increasing the fares of Metro 2A and 7 lines.
