The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to install marine navigation buoys (guides) with complete mooring facilities and solar lanterns. There will a mark near the low tide line (LTL) in the sea, indicating the end of immersion zone.
This development comes as during Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri, many people immerse idols in the deep sea. This poses a risk of accident, and there are also difficulties in removing the idols from the water later.
According to a report, the Environment Department of BMC has decided to install this system. This system will be installed at Girgaum Chowpatty, Dadar Shivaji Park, Juhu, Versova, Aksa, Gorai, Manori, among others. Ganesh idols as well as idols of goddesses are also immersed in these sea.
At least five people die during the Ganesh visarjans each year on an average in Mumbai. Apart from lifeguards, the coastal wing of Mumbai police, the Coast Guard, and the Indian Navy maintain vigil during the main days of visarjan.
A tender has also been floated for this work. This new guide system will be installed at a total of 43 places on six quays. The aim is also to stop environmental damage.
This system will be installed under the supervision of two institutions recognized by the Central Government, which are experts in this. These two organizations will determine where exactly the low tide line and high tide line in Mumbai are and how far the solar light-based directional system should be installed.
The last date for submitting tenders for this work is June 16. The official informed that there will be an attempt to install this system on the Chowpatty before this year's Ganeshotsav.
After the Bombay High Court issued an order banning plaster of Paris idols, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation is implementing it for this year's Ganeshotsav as well. Various measures are being taken for this.
