According to reports, Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale has given every police station in Mumbai a target of penalizing 100 mask-less people every day which makes it to 1,000 people in each zone. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided the fine for not donning masks or wearing them incorrectly to INR 200.

Based on accounts, the police have also been authorized to collect these fines. Earlier, former police commissioner, Param Bir Singh had too accorded each ward a similar target of 1,000 cases in a day in March 2021.

Orders regarding the collection of the fine have reportedly been sent to every police station from the Deputy Police Commissioner (DCP) last Saturday, January 8. It has been stated that from the INR 200 fine collected by the police, INR 100 will go to the Police Welfare Fund, the remaining will be sent to the civic body.

Narratives claim that till September 2021, the Mumbai police had collected nearly INR 9.01 crore as fines from those not donning masks as well as those not adhering to the COVID-19 restriction from 4.5 lakh people.

Certain reports have cited that according to a police report, from January 3, 2020, to March 23, 2021, nearly 3,76,915 cases of COVID-19 safety measures violators were registered. The aggregate fine collected was INR 1,91,34,39,418.
