While the rainfall had paused briefly in the city for the last couple of days, on Monday, September 7, the city witnessed downpour again.

On Monday morning, heavy rains lashed Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai in the wee hours. The downpour which usually falls with calm resilience reached a point where there were thunderstorms in the early hours. The people of Mumbai who have been suffering from the hot and humid weather conditions, therefore, breathed a sigh of relief as the rain hit the city.

On Saturday, the maximum temperature recorded by IMD’s Santacruz observatory was 33.6 degrees Celsius, while Colaba station recorded 33.2 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity was 85 per cent.

In July-August, heavy rains lashed the state including Mumbai. After that, the rain had stopped for the last five days. However, from 4.30 am to 5 am, thunder and lightning were witnessed by the people in the city. Shortly thereafter, it began to rain. Initially, the rainfall was light. However, it continued to grow considerably.

In August, the city received 67 per cent surplus rainfall than the average, however, the city has recorded 50 per cent deficient rain in the first five days of September. The normal rainfall between September 1 and 5 is 13.8 mm. No rain was recorded on Saturday. In 24 hours, ending at 8.30 am on Saturday, Santacruz recorded 6.9 mm rain. However, with the early morning rain experience today, the situation is likely to change.
