A new initiative by the Mumbai Region post office could soon change the outlook of the conventional mail carrier or postman/postwoman. The agency will name two of its staff as “Smartest Postman“ every month while also honouring them with a badge.

Officials said that candidates will be chosen based on merit each month by the Postmaster-General, Swati Pandey who is also said to be the brains behind this initiative.

The criteria to become a Smartest Postman includes the way they present themselves, including the tidiness of uniforms, as well as their expertise with technology, mainly the use of smartphones. This comes as postal services are expanding their online presence with the help of dedicated apps as well as other online support services for customers.

The badge provided to the two candidates each month has been designed by philatelist Kapil Gogri. He also happens to be the representative for India as a Fellow at the Royal Philatelic Society, London.

Two mail carriers from the Mumbai General Post Office (GPO) namely Shobha Dinesh Chogle and Vilas Shankar Rane, along with two mail carriers from Kalbadevi Head Post office Shyamal Doye and Chetan Salimath have been awarded the Smartest Postman badge for the first two months of the year.

Speaking on the honour, postwoman Shobha Dinesh Chogle to mid-day said, “In my 29 years of service, this is the first time that I have received such an honour. Seeing the badge on my uniform, people have started respecting me even more. I thank Pandey ma’am for encouraging the postmen cadre and creating healthy competition. Everyone now has the aim to do better.”

Detailing the initiative, Postmaster-General Swati Pandey said, “Postmen have been serving us since time immemorial. However, they have never been rewarded for their arduous work and the tedious miles they cover. What is more impressive is that in this modern era, the get-up, look and feel and the personality of a postman has undergone a phenomenal change too!”

“They have been trained to operate the latest post office mobile applications and each of them has become equally well-groomed, tech-savvy and smart in their work. So to acknowledge their efforts and encourage the makeover of their image, we have initiated the ‘Smartest Postman’ campaign,” she added.
