Amid the approaching BMC elections, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday, July 23 vouched to offer pothole-free roads in Mumbai in the next two years, reports stated. This comes in the aftermath of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reviewing the status of BMC's road works.

Based on accounts, during the review, Shinde asked the BMC to see to it that the prevalent potholes on Mumbai roads that crept up because of heavy rainfall are repaired on a priority basis. He also asked that smooth movement of traffic is ensured without resulting in hindrances to travellers.

Narratives suggest that the review transpired on Saturday wherein BMC Chief Iqbal Singh Chahal made a presentation to Shinde. The BMC in a statement elaborated on how on behalf of the BMC, Chahal assured Shinde that work of cement concretisation on Mumbai roads will be finished in the coming two years and the roads will be free of potholes.

The statement reportedly added that presently, the activity of cement concretisation of 236 km of roads has been done 2022-23 at a cost of INR 2,200 crore. Similarly, work on 400 km of roads has been proposed for the coming two years, with the work of cement concretisation of 989.84 km of roads already finished.

While interacting with the media, Shinde elucidated that they have drawn a program to make Mumbai free of potholes in the coming two years. He added that in the next two years, all roads in Mumbai will be concertised, and soak pits will be made through the media and the road's sides to ensure that rainwater can flow off the roads.

Shinde opined that yearly, the BMC has been making use of the cold mix to fill potholes which are now coming off causing accidents. Thus, he said it has been decided that potholes will be repaired with advanced eco polymer techniques and rapid setting concrete. He claimed that Chahal has assured him that this will see to it that Ganpati pandals will not be unconvinced because of potholes.

According to reports, in the presentation, Chahal highlighted that the latest tenders for road works have a clause of seeking construction of soak pits regularly on roads newly made to ensure that rainwater does not accumulate.

Further, narratives claimed that from the 400 km of proposed road works through the next two years, 50 km are in the island city which will resurface at a cost of INR 800 crore. Moreover, 75 km, are in the eastern suburbs which will be resurfaced at a cost of INR 600 crore.

Additionally, nearly 275 km of roads, are in western suburbs will be resurfaced at a cost of INR 3,500 crore, Therefore, the aggregate cost of repairing 400 km of roads is estimated to be INR 4,900 crore.
