With the incessant spell of rainfall subsiding in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was quick on its feet to fill potholes on the roads. These entailed the arterial linking road for which it has been receiving stark criticism.

According to reports, the civic body made use of cold mix technology on asphalt roads to fill potholes. Its name can be attributed to the fact that it does not require heat for the application procedure, in contrast to hot asphalt. The method cannot be used during heavy rainfall because it washes off in hours.

Based on accounts, data brings to light that this year, the BMC has filled more than 12,200 potholes using 1,258 metric tonnes of cold mix. This is reportedly made at the civic authority's asphalt pant in Worli. On average during monsoon, yearly, the BMC utilizes 11,000 metric tonnes of pothole mix,

Officials from the Roads and Traffic department were quoted in narratives elaborating on how once the potholes are repaired by means of the cold mix material, they need at least 12 hours to stabilise during which there should be a dry spell and the traffic should be stopped.

Narratives suggest that as temporary means, the BMC makes use of paver blocks during heavy rainfall to fill potholes. Apparently, the BMC has been making use of the cold mix material since 2018-19 to fix potholes. In the midst of this, however, corporators have been questioning its success.

Moreover, it has been reported that on Sunday, July 17, Additional Municipal Commissioner P Velrasu who heads the civic roads department inspected many roads in the western suburbs alongside a team of civic officials to inspect the work on pothole filling. These comprised, AndheriJuhu, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali, Goregaon, and Jogeshwari.

Velrasu is believed to have asked officials to check other means of fixing potholes. On one hand, he told Deputy Municipal Commissioner Ulhas Mahale, who is in charge of infrastructure, to submit engineering solutions for potholes during monsoon.

He also told engineers to assess the feasibility of making use of pre-cast concrete and steel plates to fix potholes in Mumbai. He then asked engineers to look into the feasibility of using pre-cast concrete plates and steel plates to fix potholes in Mumbai.
