The newborn Humboldt was born to Flipper (female) and Molt (male) at Byculla's Veermata Jijabai Bhosale (VJB) Zoo. The Byculla zoo authorities declared that the penguin was found dead on August 22.
On August 24, Byculla’s Veermata Jijabai Bhosale (VJB) Zoo declared the death of the newborn chick after nine days of its birth. Byculla Zoo authorities stated that both the parents were taking good care of the chick but surprisingly, the chick was found dead on August 22 at the night hours.
The Byculla Zoo declared about the death of the newborn through a press release:
After which, the chick was sent to a team of professors from Bombay Veterinary College, Parel for the post-mortem on August 23 at 9:30 am by the Byculla Zoo authorities. The post-mortem reports stated that the chick was revealed to have had newborn anomalies like yolk sac retention and liver dysfunction which were the prime reason for the newborn’s death.
While the country was celebrating Independence Day, the baby penguin broke through the eggshell on August 15. The baby chick was born to penguin couple Flipper (female) and Molt (male) who had laid the egg on July 5, 2018. The baby chick was the first penguin to be born in captivity in the country.
Besides, there were talks that there was going to be possible addition of a female and two male penguins with procurement agency Goa Trade, which was associated with them in flying in the existing colony seabirds. The officials have stated that they are already in communication with the agency as the zoo is large enough to carry 25 penguins.
However, after the death of the young Humboldt, will the deal with Byculla zoo be cancelled?
