Travel enthusiasts in Maharashtra can rejoice as the the state government has planned on setting up a new picnic spot on the Nhava Island near Mumbai. As per reports, CIDCO has taken the possession of apporximately 60 hectares of land on three sides of the historic Elephanta Island at Nhava, near Karanjade and Thane Bay.
It is said that the government intends to develop a mega tourism project on the island. According to Navi Mumbai's development plan, this area falls under Regional Park Zone (RPZ), and out of 60 hectare land, 30 hectares falls under Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ). The state government's town planning department has considered using the entire site for tourism, cultural and social activities which will be based as per the plan proposed to make it a tourist destination.

Being very close to the Shivdi-Nhavasheva Trans Harbor Sea-Link, this locatio can become one of the popular places for visitors from Mumbai.
To implement the same, CIDCO has invited EoI applications for the development of the site and interested entities will have to submit the same by Friday, July 2, 2021. CIDCO has developed 14 nodes divided into the North and South parts of Navi Mumbai. The Nothern nodes include Airoli, Koparkhairane, Vashi, Sanpada, Nerul, Belapur while the southern include Kharghar, Kamothe, Kalamboli, Pushpak, Panvel, Ulwe and Dronagiri.

The proposed Nhava Island attraction is located at a distance of 5 km from Ulwe and is expected to become one of the important hot spots for tourism in the state. Meanwhile, several environmentalists from the district and other parts of the state have opposed this plan and expressed their displeasure. Experts believe that once developed, this project could affect the ecology. With an aim to find a solution, they have written to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asking the government to discontinue the plan.
