A level-II fire broke out in Khar-based Nutan villa on Thursday, which claimed one life and left two injured. The fire broke out in an electric duct located on the first floor of the building, and the three people were trapped in the building. Records state that the building was owned by a popular jewellery store in Bandra.

The rescue team doused the fire in four hours and was able to save two people. However, Hema Jagwani (40) died in the incident. Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai Fire Department and the police investigated the matter and a day after the incident, the concerned department planned to issue a notice to the owner of Nutan Villa for not maintaining the fire-fighting system.

Officials have issued the notice under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act-2006. Reports stated that the fire fighting system of the seven-storey building was not operational and no audit report was submitted as required every six months, once in January and July. The owners have been asked to submit a report regarding the incident and fix the errors in the next 120 days.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the electric duct located on the ground floor caught fire due to which the entire building was logged with smoke. Hema and two others who lived in the on top floor of the building suffered due to suffocation as they were stranded in the windowless lobby. She was rushed to the hospital where she was announced dead.

A report regarding the same was published in the Indian Express. Quoting a senior official from the Mumbai fire brigade, the publication said, “While all three women were trapped on the 7th floor, two of them (Palak and Sangeeta Thakur) moved toward a window of the room, and the firefighters were able to rescue them from the outside, using turntable ladders. However, the deceased (Jagwani) was in another room. She walked out into the lobby to use the staircase but got stuck there. The firefighters pulled her (body) out from the staircase. If she had also moved toward a window, we would have been able to rescue her from outside.”
