On Wednesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Standing Committee put off the proposal to designate road safety auditors for Mumbai. The cost of this was supposed to be nearly Rs 20,000/km, cite reports.

The plan was to appoint an auditor to undertake an audit regarding road safety for three years in the city. Altogether, Rs 3.15 cr was to be spent on the project. This project was one of a kind when an agency was brought in to check the road safety in the city. However, the civic authority faced immense backlash over the financial aspects of the said project. The opposition too had questioned its cost.

Asif Zakaria, the Congress corporator, based on a report by Times of India stated that whilst road safety auditors will give the best advice, it won’t be possible to follow their recommendations and put them into force. He believes that the civic authority shouldn’t undertake such a significant expenditure on the auditors. Additionally, he thinks that their appointment will be similar to that of the auditors for road works, where they were participants in the road scam. He recommends that a pilot project for a road or two should be done and necessary steps for others can then be undertaken.
