Every day, innumerable passengers of the country reach their desired destination by taking advantage of railway facilities. Railways has now taken a significant step, due to which some things will definitely change in the future.

The Railway board has increased the compensation made in case of death and injuries to anyone in train accidents by 10 times.

In the Mumbai Railway Division, if a breadwinner lost his life in a railway accident, the Railway Department used to give an amount of INR 50,000 as compensation to the family members (heirs or relatives) of that person. There was a provision of INR 25,000 for the injured. However, after 11 years, this amount has now been increased 10 times. An amount of INR 5 lakh will be given as compensation to the family and relatives of those who died, meanwhile the amount received by the injured will be INR 2.5 lakh. The ex-gratia relief was last revised in 2012 and 2013.

This has been made applicable from September 18 to passengers involved in train accidents, including collisions and derailments, as well as individuals affected by accidents at manned railway crossing gates. They also apply to victims of untoward incidents, including violent attacks, robberies, arson, or accidents involving passengers falling from trains.

Furthermore, the railway authorities have extended their compassion to those affected by untoward incidents.

In cases of violent attacks, robberies, arson, or any accidents involving passengers falling from trains, the families of the deceased will now receive INR 1.5 lakh in ex-gratia compensation. Victims of grievous injuries will be entitled to INR 50,000. And those with simpler injuries will receive INR 5,000.

The new guidelines also encompass accidents that occur at manned railway crossing gates. Victims of such accidents will receive the same increased compensation rates, providing them with the necessary support during their recovery and rehabilitation.

The provisions for hospitalization have also seen significant improvements.

If passengers are grievously injured in train accidents, including derailments and collisions, they will receive INR 3,000 per day for hospitalization, which will be released every ten days or upon discharge, whichever comes earlier.

This support extends for a maximum period of 12 months, ensuring that the injured individuals receive the necessary care and financial assistance during their recovery, said an official.

Similarly, victims of untoward incidents will receive INR 1,500 per day for hospitalisation for the initial six months, and after that, INR 750 per day for the following five months.

This phased approach recognises the prolonged nature of recovery for some victims and seeks to alleviate their financial stress during this period.
