As per an update released on April 8, 2020, the total number of cases in Maharashtra has increased to 1135. The report released by the state health department stated that 117 new cases were identified in Maharashtra on Wednesday, out of which 72 cases were from Mumbai.

This exponential increase in the numbers has raised alarms for many departments both at the city and state-level governance. Earlier this week, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had planned to seal some more areas in Mumbai, calling them the no-go zones or containment areas. Based on a report released by the local municipality, the highest number of cases in the city were observed in Worli and Prabhadevi area. Besides this, other areas like Dharavi, Andheri and Grant Road were also on the top of the list.

On Wednesday, BMC officials were also informed about a positive case Mumbai's L-ward (Kurla) and keeping the safety in mind, the respective department along with Mumbai Police has sealed the locality. All the street vendors were also asked to shut their respective businesses to maintain safety as per the norms. These containment zones are planned to ensure that the virus is contained within the area, as no members are allowed to leave or enter the premise. Essentials for these residents are being provided.

Further, BMC Commissioner released a statement which stated that wearing a mask in Mumbai is mandatory henceforth. All the people across the city, who are seen in public for whatsoever reason and whichever time, have to wear either a 3-ply mask or a cloth mask.
