Omicron Scare: Maharashtra Reports 75 New Cases, Deputy CM Chairs Meeting Amid Surge In Numbers

On Tuesday, January 4, Maharashtra reported 75 new cases of the highly transmissible variant of COVID-19, Omicron, highlighted state government data. This took the total tally of the Omicron variant in Maharashtra to date to 653.

Of the 75 new Omicron cases, 40 were from Mumbai. With these updates in numbers, so far there have been 408 cases of Omicron in Mumbai. This entails, 26 patients who are out of state, nine foreign nationals, while one patient each is from Raigad, Palghar, Jalgaon, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Aurangabad. Moreover, seven patients are from Thane and four are from Kolhapur.

In Maharashtra, so far, 259 Omicron cases have recovered. Amid the surge in cases, Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar chaired a meeting with Health Minister Rajesh Tope and other senior government officials on Wednesday, January 5. Based on accounts, no decision on imposing a lockdown was undertaken during the meeting.

On the other hand, the state reported 18,466 new COVID-19 cases. Apart from this, on Tuesday it registered 20 fatalities owing to the coronavirus.

With this, the active number of cases in the state now stands at 66,308. Additionally, 4,558 patients also recovered from the virus on Tuesday.
