Omicron Scare: All You Need To Know If You’re Travelling Across Maharashtra

Amid fears of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, the Maharashtra government has brought into force certain travel restrictions. With a plethora of regulations in place, here’s a simplified list of guidelines for travellers:

Amid fears of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, the Maharashtra government has brought into force certain travel restrictions. As of November 26, the list of countries from where passengers will be required to adhere to additional steps on arrival to India that entail post-arrival testing are:

  • European countries (including the UK)
  • South Africa
  • Brazil
  • Bangladesh
  • Botswana
  • China
  • Mauritius
  • New Zealand
  • Zimbabwe
  • Singapore
  • Hong Kong
  • Israel

All passengers from these countries travelling to Mumbai will have to undergo a self-paid post-arrival COVID-19 test at the port of arrival.

With a plethora of regulations in place, here’s a simplified list of guidelines for travellers.

Travel Guidelines Into Mumbai

  • Mumbai Airport will not board any passengers for landing in Mumbai without a negative RT-PCR test that is taken within 72 hours of departure. Exceptions apply to family distress, wherein testing will be permitted on arrival at Mumbai Airport.
  • All domestic passengers landing at Mumbai airport need to carry a negative RT-PCR test.
  • The Government of India issued guidelines are to be implemented at Mumbai Airport with immediate effect.
  • The Government of Maharashtra rules will be functional from 23:59 hours of December 2.

Travel Guidelines Into Maharashtra 

International Travellers

  • DCP Immigration and FRRO to curate a proforma of declaration for all arriving international passengers to provide details of countries visited in the last 15 days.
  • MIAL will have to share information with all the airlines which will be cross-checked by immigration on arrival.

International Travellers From “At-Risk Countries”

  • International passengers from “at-risk” countries can be deplaned on priority, separate counters will be arranged by MIAL and Airport Authority for checking.
  • These passengers will have to undertake compulsory seven-day institutional quarantine.
  • RT-PCR test will be conducted on days 2, 4 and 7.
  • If any tests are found positive, the passenger will be shifted to the hospital.
  • If all tests are found negative, the passenger will have to undergo further seven days of home quarantine.

International Travellers From Countries Except Those “At-Risk”

  • Passengers will have to undergo a compulsory RT-PCR test at the airport on arrival.
  • If negative, they will have to undergo 14 days of home quarantine.
  • If positive, they will be shifted to the hospital.

International Passengers Having Connecting Flight To Any Other Airport In India

  • Without leaving the airport, passengers will undergo an RT-PCR test at the first arrival airport in Maharashtra.
  • On being found negative, can board a connecting flight.
  • Information about these passengers will be passed by the airline of connecting flight to destination airport before take-off.
  • Destination Airport to make arrangements for separating these passengers on arrival.
  • If passengers take connecting flights to an airport in Maharashtra, they will have to follow quarantine rules stated for landing directly from an international source.

Domestic Air Travel Passengers

  • Travellers within the states will either need to be fully vaccinated or mandatorily carry an RT-PCR test within 48 hours of the time of arrival.

Fully Vaccinated Local Domestic Passengers

  • Can travel without RT-PCR test. However, if the travel history of the last 10-15 days shows a visit to Omicron affected regions, they can leave only after negative RT-PCR test post seven days quarantine.

Passengers From Other States

  • Negative RT-PCR test within 48 hours of arrival, compulsory without exceptions.
