The seven lakes consisting of Bhatsa, Tulsi, Vihar, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa and Upper Vaitarna, provide Mumbai with a daily 3,800 million liters of water
Water scarcity has always been an issue for people in Maharashtra and currently, majority of the state is facing the crisis. However, soon Mumbai too could face the same issue as the dams that are source of water are only filled up to 22 per cent of their total capacity.
The water storage this year has seen a reduction of 17 per cent as compared to last year. Therefore, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked the citizens to conserve water and use the resources responsibly.
Citing the information provided by the Standing Committee, BMC's Chief Hydraulic Engineer, Ashok Tawadia said that only 22 per cent of water storage is available out of the seven lakes for Mumbai.
The seven lakes consisting of Bhatsa, Tulsi, Vihar, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa and Upper Vaitarna, provide Mumbai with a daily 3,800 million liters of water.
Last year, till May 3, the dams of Mumbai had a water storage of 39 per cent. However, the civic body has decided to utilise the water supply from the storage until July 2019.
Currently, the citizens have been facing a 10 per cent water supply cut since the municipal corporation plans to use the water storage until July. The civic body has requested permission from the state government to use the reserve water storage from Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna dams. It is expected that Mumbai won't face another water supply cut.
