Dharavi, one of the biggest slums in Asia, reported only one fresh COVID-19 case on Tuesday. Situated in the centre of Mumbai, Dharavi is densely populated and has come a long way from being one of the major COVID-19 hotspots to flattening the curve.

As per the official data, the number of COVID-19 cases in Dharavi has reached 2,335 since April 5 which is when the slum dominated area recorded its first coronavirus case. Dharavi has a population near to seven lakh which is packed in an area of just 2.5 square kilometres.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials have informed that nearly 1,734 people have recovered from COVID-19 while active cases in the area remain 325. This amounts to an impressive recovery rate.

After the fear of coronavirus spread in Dharavi, the BMC launched a programme to contain the spread of COVID-19 which is the ‘Dharavi model’ based on 4-Ts which is tracing, tracking, testing and treating.

The 4-Ts model is now being used in the areas in north Mumbai to contain the spread of the coronavirus. The western suburbs of the city have emerged to be new major COVID-19 hotspot.

Maharashtra has been one of the worst-hit states due to the coronavirus outbreak. The number of COVID-19 cases in the state has reached 2,17,121 while the death toll has touched 9,250.

On Tuesday, nearly 5,134 COVID-19 cases were reported in Maharashtra and 785 in Mumbai. Meanwhile, 225 fresh COVID-19 deaths were reported in the state and 64 in Mumbai.
