D. C. P. Deepak Deoraj (Operations) has ordered a restriction on Chinese lanterns/ sky lanterns and this order will be applicable from October 16 to November 14.

The order has been passed under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CRPC) and legal action could be taken against those who violate this order.


Fine for violators 

A penalty of up to INR 200 and imprisonment for up to a month could be levied against the violators.


Why is the sky lantern dangerous?

The lanterns as beautiful as they are, float through the sky with no control where they might land. They can set things on fire very easily and can cause really bad injuries to people and infrastructure around with the wire or bamboo frames getting tangled up.


No ban on firecrackers and rockets 

Every year, there are approximately 40 incidents of fire during Diwali due to sky lanterns. There is no ban on rockets, parachutes, and other crackers.

The ban on sky lanterns is not applicable to rocket parachutes and other crackers," Mumbai Police spokesperson Deepak Deoraj.
