After the death of a 32-year-old youth in an unfortunate accident, the Nair hospital has now closed its MRI unit for the next 20 days, due to which people will have to visit other government hospitals for treatment and check up. Other hospitals which offer the service include KEM, Sion or Government Hospital.

The state of the hospital offering MRI service is rather alarming, as the facility is only available in three big hospitals of the city - BMC, Nair, Sion and KEM Hospital - which leads to a heavy demand. But now with one additional hospital shutting the division temporarily, patients may have to wait and be patient for treatments.

Talking about the same, Dr. Avinash Supe, Dean, KEM Hospital said. "Currently, only emergency patients from Nair Hospital requiring MRI services are being examined at KEM Hospital. Every day around 30 MRIs are performed at KEM, and keeping the capability in mind, there will not be any issues in taking 3 to 4 additional emergency MRI requests from Nair Hospital."

Adding to that Dr. Angha Joshi, chief of the Radiology Department of Sion Hospital, said, "A patient needs 45 minutes for an MRI session. Currently, the doctors and technicians work here in two shifts. But now, if the patients of KEM and Nair Hospital also come to us, the burden of work increases. Hence, MRI is now suggested only in case of emergency, where a date is suggested for patients and children, keeping their condition and need in mind."

Lately, MRI services have been in demand. As per the study conducted on Monday, it was inferred that the hospitals have a waiting period of minimum three months, which means more inconvenience for patients, and lack of availability in hospitals.
