On Tuesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiated a portable vacuum toilet at Mumbai’s Girgaon Chowpatty.

According to the report by the Times of India, an official elaborated on the transportable mobile nature of the facility which is atop a cargo vehicle. With one facility each for men and women, it is claimed to help save water by 90%, since it only needs a mere 1.2 litres of water per flush. The 200 litres of water will be able to address 100 vacuum flushes as against 20 flushes of the usual toilets, stated the official.

The official is said to have added on how the toilet’s location can be altered based on the demand since it's atop a vehicle that can be self-driven. In addition to this, the vacuum pumps are said to be driven with solar panel charged batteries which make this facility environmentally friendly. To ensure the maintenance of this facility, two drivers who also function as operators are accessible throughout the day. The discussed resource is currently being run on a trial basis and is thus free of cost, cited the report.

During the inaugural many dignitaries were present which included Meenal Patel, D Ward Committee Chairperson, Anuradha Potdar, local Corporator, Vijay Balamwar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Zone 1), Prashant Gaikwad, Assistant Commissioner (D Ward) and Indrani Malkani, activist.
