The standing committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved a waste-to-energy project at the Deonar valued at ₹1,000 crores. This proposition, however, has raised some questions among the opposition at the BMC.

MLA from Bhiwandi and Samajwadi Party Corporator Rais Shaikh said the matter was not discussed and that the committee members weren’t allowed to express their views or concerns on the issue.

Shaikh has also sent a letter to the chairman of the standing committee on November 4 citing a Bombay High Court directive which makes it mandatory to take the views of other corporators into account while discussing all relevant aspects mentioned in the agenda. “It was approved by the chairman without any discussion. Which is contempt for the court's order,” he said.

“The project has been opposed by the residents. The waste to energy plant will result in several environmental and health hazards and impact the health and lifestyles of the residents living around the dumping ground. Besides, I myself wanted to preset my views. I had written to the chairman before the meeting to conduct voting amongst the members before approving the project,” Shaikh added.

As per the BMC’s proposal, the waste-to-energy plant at the Deonar dumping ground will produce 25-30 megawatts of energy using 3,000 metric tons of garbage daily. This project reportedly requires a land parcel of at least 14 hectares within the 120 hectares of space at the Deonar dumping ground.
