Maharashtra has been a hotbed for the coronavirus with Pune now inching towards the 50,000-mark in the total number of coronavirus cases. In spite of the numbers, medical teams have been trying their best to treat COVID-19 cases.

Ajit Pawar, On July 17, sought the help of Iqbal Singh Chahal, BMC Commissioner, to appraise the civic authorities of Pune on the steps taken by the BMC which helped contain the spread of the coronavirus in Mumbai so that similar methods can be undertaken in Pune. Meanwhile, according to the state health department, Maharashtra witnessed a single-day spike of 8,308 fresh cases of the coronavirus on Friday, which took the total tally to 2,92,589 cases. This happens to be the third time that the number of single-day cases has breached the 8,000-mark in the state. So far, the coronavirus has claimed 258 lives on Friday alone, taking the state’s death toll to 11,452.

In the past, amidst the surge in the number of coronavirus cases in Pune, the city's civic body had decided to impose the second phase of lockdown from July 18 till July 23. The city was already in a strict lockdown whose first phase was due to end on July 18. According to sources, medical stores, dairies, hospitals, and essential services will be permitted to remain operational as per Shekhar Gaikwad, Commissioner of Pune Municipal Corporation.

The PMC has also declared its strategy to focus on the three ‘I’s — identifying patients, intensifying contract tracing and testing, and increasing bed capacity. Moreover, containment zones will be observed in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad area, and the nearby 22 villages that have been identified as COVID-19 hotspots. Furthermore, the PMC has stated that it hopes that the above-mentioned measures would help contain the contagious spread of the disease and safeguard the people in the areas.
