Lawyer Kapil Sibbal to represent hawkers in Bombay High Court

In the last few days, Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Congress' Sanjay Nirupam have been fighting over hawkers issue where the former attacked the hawkers while the latter asked hawkers to fight against MNS.

Now, eminent lawyer Kapil Sibbal is stepping in to fight for hawkers, confirmed Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam on Twitter.



Why is Kapil Sibbal taking a stance for hawkers?

On November 1, 2017, Bombay High Court issued an order stating that the hawkers cannot work within 100 meters of distance of school and college premises. Nirupam has decided to challenge this order where he roped in eminent lawyer Sibbal who will be fighting for hawkers.

As per the HC orders


  • HC denied permission for hawkers to work anywhere they feel like
  • Hawkers should work in designated places
  • Cannot work within 100 meters of distance of school premises
  • Cannot work within 150 meters of distance of railway station premises
  • Hawkers cannot work on skywalks, FOBs
